Introduction to Discus Fish

The Discus fish is a large freshwater type cichlid. Discus fish is found originaly in the Amazon river in South America. Discus fish were first discovered By Dr. J. Heckel in 1840. Dr.J.Heckel was an Austrian zoologist.

Discus fish came originally in three color variation Blue, Green and Brown. However after people started breeding fresh water Discus fish and investing lot of money into research different variation of Discus fish were developed. These are known as Discus Aquarium Fish.The variation of color and pattern is now limitless as there are n number of Discus fish varieties.

Dr. J. Heckel's name is used today to describe the original Discus fish type. The original Discus fish variants are difficult get, but occasionally you may find one.

Traditionally it has been difficult to breed Discus. Discus fish require right conditions to live and breed. Discus are also susceptible to disease. But these days it is becoming easy to keep discus because of the technology and available expertise.

Earlier to get Discus fish one was required to go to the specialized aquatic store. But as Discus fish are becoming increasingly popular, they are even available in smaller aquatic shops.
